3 Ex-Husbands Created One Business and No Gurus

All the ways we can work together… I lead women back to their own knowing and it’s the worst business model ever.

Three ex-husbands later, I’d love to say that makes me an expert in love. What it actually makes me an expert in is starting over. I run a business where the goal is for you to stop needing me. Yes, it’s a terrible business model. The women who work with me don’t come looking for another guru, mentor, or coach. They need someone to help them hear themselves again, decide what comes next, and create a plan to make it happen.

So where does this story begin? Let’s start with my first divorce - the marriage I left for another man.  Oh my, I was only 24.  Still a new mom with young children, getting my corporate sea legs under me, and enamored with middle-class wealth. The idea of a dual-income home had me donning my first pair of rose colored glasses and I ran smack dab into a man who said all the right things and meant none of them.  I blew up my life for him.  Divorce #1.

Maybe I could share the time I left an abusive husband after I convinced myself he would stuff my dead body in the trunk before he’d know how to love me. The night I hid my car in a friend’s garage and listened to my husband drive past the house at 1 am, I did not imagine I’d one day build a business out of that mess. The next morning, I went to work at Dell as if nothing had happened. Divorce #2.

Or perhaps I should start with the divorce that sounds like so many you know. I was left at home with small children, told I was too much, and spent weeks becoming a private investigator to find out just how many times he cheated.  And still, I wanted so badly to stay married, to get it right and to “succeed” at marriage.  Divorce #3.

I’ve lived through every type of divorce there is.  The World War III version that leaves everyone reeling and destruction in its path. The amicable one that looks easy from the outside. The terrifying one you’re not sure you’ll survive. The one you left. The one where you were left. Whichever one is a part of your story, you’ll move from fear into a cloud of confusion, then into overwhelm, long before you can imagine life feeling exciting and new again.  Then, you’ll twist and turn, pop back into old stages just when you thought you had a handle on things.  Grief isn’t linear.  Our journeys are not straightforward.

Each of my marriages were different. Each time I vowed forever, I meant it. I never thought any one of them would end.  And yet, all marriages end, don't they?  Either in death or divorce.  Each time one of mine ended, I was left wondering how I’d survive on my own.  It was just me.  Alone. Wondering how in the hell I was going to provide for my kids and what on earth I’d do next.

But I figured it out and you will too.  You can absolutely do it on your own.  You can jump on the struggle bus and hustle your way through rebuilding. You can paddle like crazy under the water while you look like you have it all together above it - just like a duck.  Or what if there was an easier way?  Instead of spending another six months in therapy, or spinning the same ideas around in your mind at 3 am, how about I save you some time?

I wrote So You’re Divorced, So What? after my third divorce.  It is truly the prettiest divorce book you’ll ever read.  When the papers are signed and you’re still waiting on the ink to dry … that’s when you pick it up.  Not when you’re still tallying every asset and dividing a whole life into columns on a spreadsheet, but after the dust has settled and you still feel lost. When you have a glimmer of hope about this new life you’ll build. When the ideas about what you do next come rolling in and keep you awake at night.  When the daydreams begin to sneak into the background of your thoughts between carpool and groceries, you start to picture a life all your own. That’s when you read my book and that’s when we work together.

Three ex-husbands later … I have now built an entire business around helping women hear themselves again, learn to trust their intuition and choose what comes next… with intention.  The really fun part is building a way for you to have what you actually want. After time with me, you won’t need another guru or coach to validate what you already know. You’ll stop reading self-help books and start decorating your home again.  You’ll build a life that feels easy, free, and yours.  Which is precisely why this is the worst business model ever. My goal is for you to need me less.

Maybe you’re sitting there thinking, “Okay Shaunna, that’s great, but I’m broke and I just need some relief”. When you need to quiet the noise that is your life and you’re just trying to decide what comes next, breathwork, meditation, and journaling can give you perspective that comes from an intentional pause. Those three steps are the basis of my Afternoon Reset, where I guide women through the process in small groups. I’ve created ways to access the same clarity from the comfort of your own home in my private sessions.

After divorce, there comes a moment when knowing you will be okay and that a new life is possible is no longer enough. You’re sitting in the aftermath of a life that’s been blown up beyond recognition, and you’re in a new house that’s just barely starting to feel like home, and you think, “Well, okay.  Now what?”  That’s where I really love to play. Diving deep, creating the plan and strategizing all the way to your next chapter that supports you financially is what really lights me up.

The last thing I want to ask any woman to do is make another decision when she’s living in decision fatigue. I’d much rather meet you where you are.
